Lifestyle Architectural Photography Shoots

At times, we get asked to integrate lifestyle images into our architectural shoots. In 2023, branding has taken on a new meaning as it’s compelled companies to evoke a distinct feeling around their work. The narrative within the images shifts from a focus on the materials that make up the space to how the subjects utilize the space. We see this trend in hospitality spaces, as they strive to stay fresh, vibrant and up-to-date.

As an architectural photographer, we see branding projects from a different perspective than traditional lifestyle photographers. Typically lifestyle photographers focus solely on the people, creating a soft and airy background. We aim to capture images that will appeal to both the architect and client by placing subjects in a manner that show off both the space and the subjects. The background may not be as soft, but the images are taken with the intent of making it more about the architecture without losing the emotion you get from a lifestyle image.

Our approach during a lifestyle shoot often differs from our typical day-to-day as an architectural photographer.

In a lifestyle shoot, you have a shallower depth of field and each scene is heavily curated. We enlist models, offer styling accessories, props and carefully stage each scene to create a dynamic environment. Interestingly, elements like blown out windows or sun flares, typically discouraged in the architectural realm, can give life to a lifestyle image. Moreover, while color balanced images are generally crucial, it has less significance on a lifestyle shoot.

We recently shot a hospitality space that incorporated all of these elements. We appreciated having their staff on-site in guiding the collaboration and storytelling of the space. Towards the end of the day, we transitioned from using a tripod to shooting handheld. This approach allowed us to capture more authentic emotions and postures, resulting in incredibly genuine images within their space.

The use of subjects gives viewers a sense of space. Our goal is to evoke the feeling that they are immersed in that particular moment, as if they were integral to the scene. This approach is valuable for clients because they’re not only selling the space, but the memories that the space will create for people. Lifestyle shoots connect the architectural elements to the people that use them and the stories that will come from it. A full circle moment if you ask us!
